NOAA Weather Radio
NOAA Weather Radio, SAME Coding
NWR service to a county depends on reliable signal reception, which typically extends in about a 40 mile radius from the transmitter, assuming level terrain. Counties without NWR coverage or partial NWR coverage will be so indicated. Some counties or parts thereof, especially in mountainous areas, that are listed as having NWR coverage, may not have reliable reception in some locations due to signal blockages and/or excessive distance from the transmitter.
SAME coding is new technology that allows the user to preset their weather radio to receive selected warnings for specific counties eliminating the need to hear warnings not applicable to their location!
Here in Portage County on a radio so equipped, you would want to set your SAME code for 039133. Where 039 is the state (Ohio) and 133 being Portage County. Make certain you are listening to KDO-94 which is the Akron site on 162.400 mhz as this is the station that issues advisories for this area. A good practice is to also set your radio for Summit County, 039153 in order to hear approaching watches and warnings.
After that it is a matter of preference as to what watches or warnings you care to listen to. See your instruction manual on how to program or omit the desired watches or warnings
Check out the Ohio Skywarn Frequencies section for a list of NOAA Weather Radio frequencies and SAME Codes in this area.
